Coming into its eighth year, the Sencia Bonspiel started in 2001 when Irene Kozlowski, Managing Director of Sencia Canada Ltd., wanted to try something different (and a little more fun) for a Christmas staff party. Our first bonspiel consisted of 8 teams made up of employees, clients and friends of Sencia Canada Ltd.

The bonspiel, known as a “Funspiel” right from the start took place at the Port Arthur Curling Club where it has been held ever since. A great time was had by all and soon after, the bonspiel became an annual event. The bonspiel now has up to 32 teams depending on the time of year. It’s also evolved into a charity bonspiel for Thunder Bay Shelter House as all profits are donated to this local charity. The third annual bonspiel was held at Easter time rather than in December. Feedback from attendees shows that participants preferred December over Easter so, once again, we’ve moved our event to December.

The Port Arthur Curling Club is a great donator as they provide ice time at a minimal cost for this charitable event. This means more proceeds can go to the Shelter House. Because the club is willing to do this, Sencia provides in-kind services to the club year round so it’s a win-win for all. In addition, many businesses enjoy donating prizes as their business name is advertised throughout the event.
